2008 NBA Draft: Top 10
Jun 26th, 2008 by Matt
The draft stars here in a few minutes and all be updating the site here and there and who is drafted to who and my opinion on the pick.
ESPN is already reported that the Bulls will select Derrick Rose from Memphis.
1st Round
1st pick
Chicago Bulls
Derrick Rose
Matt: Some say Beasley some say Rose I’m a Rose guy more then Beasley because A Derrick Rose in my opinion is tougher to come along in this league then a Beasley. Hinrich and Gordon have value to get a solid big man in my opinion. Can’t go wrong either way anyway.
Tony: Great leadrship. Hard worker. Solid game top to bottom. A player the Bulls couldn’t pass up. Creates a full backcourt, but look for a trade later on or before the season to positions themselves even stronger. Great pick! GO BULLS!
2nd Pick
Miami Heat
Michael Beasley (Kansas State)
Matt: Best all around talent in the draft, put up huge numbers in college but my question is can he be dominate with the worlds best?? Thats my question mark with him. But the Miami Heat are now playoff bound again with the pick and a healthy D wade and S Marion.
Tony: Beasley is a hell of a talent. He’s going to be consistent. You know what he will give you every night. He will always get his stats. Immense talent. The only question is if he can make that all work within the flow of the team, or if he’s just going for stats. Should be fun to watch.
3rd Pick
Minnesota Timberwolves
O.J. Mayo (USC)
Matt: Love the pick, has a lil baggage on him but I really don’t think its all his fault. Timberpuppies need a flat out scorer and he would fit that. I think he is gonna bring a lot of excitement to the fans of Minneapolis. I’d say my rookie of the year pick.
Tony:I think the Timberwolves will take OJ Mayo. Of course I already thought he would be gone and Beasley would have fallen to them. Mayo is a flat out scorer, athletic, natural talent. He needs size and to play some tight D but he provides some offensive spark to the slumping Timberwolves. A backcourt of Mayo and McCants if he gets healthy would be not too shabby.
Tony: Only Miami was worse than Seattle last year. These guys will take anybody and you have to think it’s going to help. Not much of an inside presence on this team. Comes down to Brook Lopez of Stanford or Kevin Love of UCLA. A guy like Eric Gordon wouldn’t surprise me either. All depends how it shakes out. Always nice to have an inside presence when you’re talking basketball though…I think Seattle goes Lopez.
4th Pick
Seattle Supersonics
Russell Westbrook (UCLA)
Matt: UMMM this really surprised me I didn’t think he’d go this early but I’m a UCLA fan and there is no doubt he is a great athlete, also a great defender which I think will turn him into a solid NBA player. I like the solid nucleus of him and Durant the future is looking bright for the Super Sonics
Tony:Good deal. This is the fun of live blogging. 4 picks in, and I’ve got two wrong. If this was baseball it’d be great. But no. This is predictions, and 50% don’t cut it. Westbrook is a surprise to me. Westbrook is a dynamic player in the backcourt. He knows how to play the game and got the taste of winning while playing at UCLA. Went higher than I expected, but could be an entertaining player in the NBA. He D’s it up, that counts a lot!
Tony:I think Memphis needs to bring in some size. I thought that about Seattle as well. We’ll see what Memphis does. Between Lopez and Love, a trade or does the Italian Danilo Gallinari get in the picture. Could be interesting.
Matt: I’m gonna say Love goes next then Lopez
5th Pick
Memphis Grizzlies
Kevin Love (UCLA)
Matt: I love Kevin Love, Shaq has been my favorite big man forever and when he is done Kevin Love is my next favorite player. Great shooting range for his size, can rebound and the chest pass is unbelievable. Needs to get his body in shape more to be a guy to deal with in this league. Can’t wait to see what he does.
Tony: Kevin Love. Do I have to say anything? I think Matt will take care of it. Solid pick and most likely the guy they wanted all along. A versatile forward with good size. Another UCLA guy who provides an inside presence. I wonder about his defense in the NBA but there’s plenty of upside and he can work on that. Solid pick.
Tony: New York Knicks. Another team in need of lots of help. A coaching change to Mike D’Antoni should make a big impact on a floundering franchise. Apparently a connection to the Italian Gallinari. I look for this pick to stay true to all the predictions. The New York fans reaction should be entertaining as always!
Matt: I can’t wait to see how they screw this up, go bayless
6th Pick
New York Knicks
Danilo Gallinari (Italy)
Matt: Another terrible pick by the Knicks this year, sorry guys like this just turn out to be busts, I know absolutely nothing about this guy but you won’t be hearing much about him in a few years anyway. NICE job KNICKS on screwing this one up.
Tony: Ah, is there anything more entertaining than New York fans? Makes you really wonder what is said at a Giants/Cowboys game or Mets and Yankees games. Good times. This guy I know nothing about. He apparently checks out. Sounds like a solid player top to bottom, can score, still young and a very tenacious approach. Anything is an upgrade for Knick’s fans, they shouldn’t be booing!
Tony: The Clippers most likely were debating on Westbrook and Eric Gordon. Westbrook in a surprise is already gone. This looks pretty clear cut for the Clippers to take the IU standout freshman. I was never a fan, but this guy has been NBA bound his entire basketball life. He should provide some scoring punch to the Clippers. Can’t wait to see how he performs.
Matt: I think Gordon would be a great fit with the Clippers.
7th Pick
L.A. Clippers
Eric Gordon (Indiana)
Matt: Great player in my book I think he can be just as good as any of the other picked before him. I love his suite, gotta love the White. I like his style.
Tony: Gordon adds some strong offensive ability. Depends if he ends up at PG or SG. Good pick, we’ll see if he’s NBA ready
Tony:Milwaukee Bucks are on the clock. They already brought in Richard Jefferson today via trade.Westrbook and Gordon are off the board. No standout PG to my knowledge on the Bucks roster. I think Jerryd Bayless moves up the board here or D.J. Augustin, I like both players but personally prefer Augustin. We should get a feel for what the Bucks are looking to do this year with this pick.
Matt: I think Bayless goes, but I think Augustin should be the guy.
8th Pick
Milwaukee Bucks
Joe Alexander
Matt: I know nothing about this guy either but by just looking at highlights he should be a great add for the Bucks with Michael Redd and Andrew Bogut. The guy sounds like a TOOL though well Steven A Smith was interviewing him so he needs to work on that.
Tony: The NBA is not my strong suit obviously. The Bucks pick Joe Alexander. An amazing athlete. This should bring some life and excitement to the SF position in Milwaukee. Interesting to see a West Virginia, I wonder who their biggest name player to be in the NBA previous to Alexander is?
Tony: The Bobcats. I’m sure they’re still stinging from the Adam Morrison pick. (I just cringed thinking about it and I’m not even a fan). There is some solid young talent on this team though. Sean May, Emeka Okafor, Jason Richardson and Gerald Wallace. Look for them to finally make Lopez a happy man finally drafted. He slipped right where the Bobcats hoped he would.
Matt: Tony I couldn’t disagree with you more, this is where Bayless goes.
9th Pick
Charollette Bobcats
D.J. Augustin
Matt: Well me and Tony are both wrong on that pick but I like the pick this guy is a true point guard in my eyes. Lot of young talent there but can they put it all together? Glad to see Jordan finally make a decent pick.
Tony:Here I sit, once again wrong, and surprised. That’s ok though, I’m high on D.J. Augustin. A small PG. This guy breaks down defenses and has a solid floater shot. He should get a chance to learn and hopefully can be groomed into something quite nice. Apparently more moves to be made by Charlotte in the future.
Tony: The Nets trades Jefferson away earlier today to bring in Yi Jianlian. Do they look to continue to solidify that that front line? Lopez is still on the board. They need to find something to give to Devin Harris. This is hard to call. I’ve been wrong a 100 times before but I’m going with Lopez yet again. I’ll eventually be right…right?
10th pick
New Jersey Nets
Brook Lopez
Matt: Can you say Shawn Bradley???
Tony: A solid 7 footer. Strong rebounder, solid inside game. Another tenacious player. He works for every points he gets and played well against the best in college basketball. Top to bottom, this guy is solid. Not the most athletic, but how many 7 footers have been. A great pick and should provide instant credibility to their inside game.
Tony: Obviously by the law of averages, there are some of these picks that are bound to not live up to the hype, that said, I think this could be a really solid top 10 in the future of the NBA. I think we will slow down our analysis on the rest of the draft just commenting here and there. Lets hope some trades spice some things up later on!
