March of the Penguins
Jun 4th, 2008 by Tony
No, not the movie, I’m actually referring to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 2008 battle for the Stanley Cup returns to Pittsburgh tonight. In what seemed to be the darling matchup of two franchises with successful histories meeting to battle it out for hockey’s ultimate prize, quickly turned into a two game deficit for the fresh faced Penguins.
It wasn’t until game three and a trip home that the Penguins got their first win of the series. Looking to build on this success and tie the series up, the Penguins were dealt a stinging blow by losing 2 to 1 in game four. Fate seemed to have picked a winner as Detroit was up three games to one and heading home to Detroit.
In a physical game mostly dictated by the Red Wings, the Penguins managed to hang tough. They started out with a two nothing lead over the Wings early into the 2nd period. Feeling confident everything seemed to be going Pittsburgh’s way. In a blink of an eye Detroit got one back. After holding the lead the rest of the 2nd period and into the 3rd, the Red Wings tied it up at the 13:17 mark of the 3rd period. This game was shaping up to be a dandy. Unfortunately, just two minutes and forty seconds later, Detroit went up 3 to 2 and seemed to be peaking at the right time to carve their names onto Lord Stanley’s Cup.
Miracles do happen though, and with just thirty-five seconds remaining from the Red Wings lifting Lord Stanley’s Cup, Max Talbot tied the game at 3 goals apiece. A classic, hard fought NHL Stanley Cup game was unfolding before our very eyes. One overtime and nothing decided. A second overtime and yet the same fate as the first one. At 10:03 in the 3rd overtime, Petr Sykora rifled a shot passed Chris Osgood and the march of the Pittsburgh Penguins was on.
Mellon Arena is the place. Game 6 of the 2008 Stanley Cup is the stage. Drama will unfold, it’s just a question in what fashion. Will Detroit hoist the cup tonight, or does the Penguin’s march continue in forcing a game 7 back in Detroit?
Historic franchises, gritty veterans and talented new comers will all be on showcase tonight. Don’t miss it. This Stanley Cup will help put the NHL back on the map, one can only hope and root for the Penguins to force a game 7. If that happens, the NHL and ESPN might just reunite.
It’s the fastest, most exciting and physical game that’ll absolutely keep you on the edge of your seat. Catch yourself some hockey tonight.
Most importantly: Go Pens Go!

The NHL is still playing? I’ve been too busy getting ready for Lakers/Celtics to notice. Who won?
The would be the Detroit Red Wings 3 to 2 in Game 5 to win 4 games to 2. Silly hockey hater!
